Luc Tuymans was a renowned and influential Belgian artist, who is ranked amongst the most successful and important European artists of the 20th Century. His work has explored the dynamics and effects of the WWII on Europe, and has produced several iconic and thought-provoking works based on history and culture.

Luc Tuymans was born in 1958, in Mortsel, Belgium. His father was a notable Belgian painter, while his mother came from a family of the Dutch Resistance activists. In 1976, Luc began his education in Fine Arts at the Sint-Lukasinstituut, in Brussels. At the age of 19, he took a job as a guard for a European railway Company in Budapest, and there he came under the influence of renowned painter, El Greco, whose works had a profound influence on his aesthetic sense and style.

In 1979, he enrolled himself at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre, in Brussels, and he remained there for a year, studying Fine Arts. In 1980, he began attending the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten. Two years later, he lost his fondness for painting, and instead, developed a keen interest in videography and films. He enrolled himself at the Vrije Universiteit, in Brussels, and began to study art history, and experimenting with films and videos for the next five years.

Luc began his career by signing up with the Zeno X Gallery, and he was one of earliest artists to have been represented by David Zwirner. Some of his earliest works include, ‘Superstition’, ‘The Heritage’, ‘Security’, and ‘Mwana Kitoko: Beautiful White Man’, all of which have been showcased at exhibitions that took place at David Zwirner, New York.

Luc’s work began to garner immense acclaim and commercial success, and retrospectives of his work were held at prestigious art galleries and museums such as, the Haus der Kunst in Munich, the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Zacheta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, Mucsarnok Kunsthalle in Budapest, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

In 2001, Luc was selected to represent Belgium at the Venice Biennale. 2002 onwards, Luc began travelling the world extensively, and his works were featured in museum collections and art galleries all over the world in on-man shows and retrospective exhibitions. Some of his most celebrated and commercially successful solo shows include, ‘The Shore’ at the David Zwirner in London, ‘Birds of a Feather’ at the Talbot Rice Gallery, ‘A Vision of Central Europe ’at Brugge Centraal, Bruges; and ‘Constable, Delacroix, Friedrich, Goya. A Shock to the Senses’ at the Albertinum in Dresden.

Several of his solo exhibitions have been hosted by the The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Menil Collection, Houston; the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; the Tate Gallery, London and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.

Some of his later works include, ‘Fortune’, ‘Proper’, ‘The Management of Magic’, ‘Intolerance’, ‘Forever’, ‘Corporate’ and ‘The Summer is Over’. In 2011, Luc was commissioned to create a mosaic for the square opposite the MAS in Antwerp, he developed the celebrated and iconic ‘Dead Skull’.

Currently, Luc Tuymans lives and works in Antwerp, where he is working on his next solo exhibition, which is scheduled for 2016.
